Tracy City, located in Grundy County, has a population of approximately 1,500. With a rich history, dating back to the discovery of coal in the city, and the inception of coke ovens used to convert coal into iron, Tracy City has listings on the National Register of Historic Places which include some of the coke ovens that remain, and the beautiful Shook House as pictured above. Tracy City has more than a handful of churches, many of which provide activities and entertainment to members and/or visitors alike. The Fiery Gizzard Sportsman Club where activities and training for things such as hunting, archery, and the like take place. Tracy City has a quaint downtown and is home to the state’s oldest bakery.
Those looking for a good bite to eat will find themselves in for a treat when they head to the elegant Tea on the Mountain Restaurant; fun dining at the Coke Oven Buffet and Grill; or an excellent pie at Daryl’s Pizza. Shopping at a grouping of retail stores made available at Hutchesons Outlet allows for a fun day of shopping for Tracy City residents, and visitors alike. Henry Flury General Store, which has been open since 1905 and is still run by a member of the Flury family, sells food, serves as a tribute to the rich history of the area, and provides a gathering place for friends. Tracy City is also right next to the Fiery Gizzard Trail, one of the most highly ranked trails in the nation. University of Miami coach Charlie Tate was a famous person who has called Tracy City home. Weather in Tracy City is mild but seasonal with cooler winters, warmer summers, and an average annual temperature in the low-sixties.
